Killing Us Softly 2859

This video isn’t new, but it’s been making its rounds on social media–I’ve personally seen it both on Tumblr and on Facebook in the last few days.

There have been many videos about how Photoshop can drastically alter a woman’s appearance, most notably from Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty. This video, from GlobalDemocracy.com, shows a girl of what seems like pretty average height and build who is turned into a leggy, lengthy girl with bigger eyes, longer shoulders, a flatter stomach, smaller feet, a longer neck, lighter skin, and nice hair. Echoing Killing Us Softly 4, the video shows how easy it is for the media to manipulate our sense of what is beautiful by creating women who don’t actually exist. It also emphasizes how women are constantly required to attempt to live up to impossible standards. Although I’ve seen a couple of videos like this before, it is often difficult to remember that the images I see in magazines don’t depict reality. Videos like this serve as a good reminder.
