Blue Velvet and Mulvey (Trigger Warning: Disturbing Images of Sexual Violence)

So, last class I tried to explain how David Lynch’s Blue Velvet fit into Mulvey’s notions of the cinematic gaze, and failed miserably. Hopefully this scene, among the most famous in the movie, will bear me out.

Please note that this scene could be highly upsetting. If you choose not to watch, the long story short is that Kyle MacLachlan’s character watches a bizarre and grotesque sexual ritual from a closet and is quietly enthralled, even though the ritual involves emotional abuse and physical violence against Isabella Rossellini’s character.
