After our class conversation, I couldn’t help but to keep thinking about gender and crying. Having two older brothers, I was trained at an early age not to cry. If I stubbed my toe really badly I was chastised if I began to cry. So in an attempt to please and fit in, I just stopped crying and quite frankly, cannot remember the last time I cried. So does that make me masculine?

I did a little research on gender and crying and found this article called “For crying out loud – the differences persist into the ‘90s.” Using very intensive research techniques and economic principles, it ran a regression analysis to determine “Masculinity-Femininity, national income, shame, and crying frequency emerged as significant predictors of mood change, (more…)

Nikita and Hysteria March 29, 2007

When watching the beginning scenes of La Femme Nikita, I found myself very annoyed that the filmmakers chose to portray her as insane. The male “hooligans” she was with at the start of the film were calm and, while “insane” in the sense that they were reckless, seemed to have the usual characteristics of male action stars (like bravado ). However, Nikita is overly emotional and childish in her outbursts (like when she gives the mouse to the computer guy and “sings”), and it felt very Ophelia to me. The way they portrayed her seemed to me a very female kind of insanity with the crying and the vacant dancing. Then there’s the blank stare in her eyes no matter whether she is being talked to or shooting a gun or whatever. Even her (more…)
