Significance of Blood in Carrie March 1, 2007

I’d like to further touch upon a topic mentioned earlier this week in discussion, the significance of blood in the movie ‘Carrie’. In the beginning, the camera focuses on the shower nozzle (which looks suspiciously phallic) and then slowly pans down to Carrie washing herself. This scene in itself is extremely sexual. When the blood starts pouring down her leg, however, the soft music fades and the audience is pulled away from the fantasy of Carrie touching herself. Carrie then appears in a full-bodied shot and I actually feel taken aback at how awkward her body looks in contrast to the other girls in the locker room. She then runs frantically about asking for help because she thinks she’s dying (which makes sense, I’d be terrified too if I didn’t know). I personally interpret her blood as a tangible medium for her own life (work with me here).. one which flows out of her but is met with disgust by those around her. She doesn’t know what to do, she’s scared, and she doesn’t know how to act, all of these things as a representation of her own life (awkward, outcast.. etc). She then gets cornered like some helpless animal by the others who go through the same emergence but have learned to adapt themselves to ‘deal’ with life.
In contrast to the opening scene, after Carrie gets the blood dumped on her and steps out (more…)

The beginning of “Carrie” is what you would expect of every other teen movie: Girls diving around for balls in a competitive game of volleyball while wearing tight fitting shirts and extremely short shorts. But it is not until the extended locker room scene that the film turns into every man’s fantasy. The extended scene depicts beautiful young girls prancing around the locker room, some half-dressed, others completely nude and embracing their bodies. Rather than jumping out of the shower and finding cover in a tightly wrapped towel, these girls are letting it all hang out. (more…)
