Angelina Jolie- gold standard of beauty? April 14, 2007

In my web surfing tonight, I happened to come across this article in the Australian publication The Age. What surprised me most was not that Jolie is representative of a standard of beauty that is desired by women and emulated by their plastic surgeons, but instead this comment from Professor Ava Shamban, a cosmetic dermatologist who spoke to a gathering of plastic/cosmetic surgery specialists in Australia:

“Angelina Jolie, with her exquisite looks, is the current gold standard of beauty in the states and in the West in general right now and that’s not about to change. The exotic look, like (actresses) Halle Berry and Penelope (more…)

Tomb Raider April 3, 2007

I haven’t seen the first Tomb Raider movie so I might be wrong here, but what suddenly struck me during the scene where Lara was training in the “Croft manor” was how really unnecessary placing her in that context was. There was no reason she had to be uber-rich for this story to work exactly the same way, and I felt like it did nothing to enhance the plot or make us understand her character at some deeper level. It did, however, seem to place this movie in a pattern that we’ve seen with lots of other female protagonists as well. For instance, while in “La Femme Nikita” Nikita’s motivation to fight is that she’s very poor and has no other way out, Lara’a motivation in this movie seems to be simply that she’s rich — that she has so much wealth she can sacrifice her time and energy to save the world over and over again.
