Tomb Raider April 3, 2007

I haven’t seen the first Tomb Raider movie so I might be wrong here, but what suddenly struck me during the scene where Lara was training in the “Croft manor” was how really unnecessary placing her in that context was. There was no reason she had to be uber-rich for this story to work exactly the same way, and I felt like it did nothing to enhance the plot or make us understand her character at some deeper level. It did, however, seem to place this movie in a pattern that we’ve seen with lots of other female protagonists as well. For instance, while in “La Femme Nikita” Nikita’s motivation to fight is that she’s very poor and has no other way out, Lara’a motivation in this movie seems to be simply that she’s rich — that she has so much wealth she can sacrifice her time and energy to save the world over and over again.
